How does it work?
When heat is applied to a sore muscles, blood vessels widen and blood flow increases to transport excess lactic acid and other toxins away from these muscles. Muscle is also softened and made more elastic by the heat, while nerve endings are stimulated to block pain signals.
What to expect in a hot stone massage
As with any massage, your therapist will take you through a client history that will include asking about any current or past illnesses, allergies, and any current conditions you may want addressed in the treatment.
You will be asked to undress to your underwear and lay on the table with a towel covering you.
Volcanic basalt stones, heated in hot water to a specific temperature will be placed over the towel on the body, or used in conjunction with massage oil to massage the body. Unless otherwise discussed, the massage will cover the glutes, back, shoulders, arms and legs. Hot stones will be used in conjunction with Swedish massage techniques to relieve tight, sore and aching muscles.
It is a very relaxing massage that relieves muscles tension like a deep tissue massage, due to the heat therapy.
When can’t I have hot stone massage?
Hot stone massage should not be used on children or during pregnancy. It should also not be used over skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, sunburnt, or other infectious skin conditions.
Anyone with heath conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease, varicose veins, metal implants, or blood-thinning medication, should consult a doctor before getting this type of massage.
If you’ve had a recent injury (in the last 72 hours) it’s advised not to use heat on the effected area. This area can be avoided during the massage.
