Maintaining good mental health often requires the same amount of care as your physical self. Here’s a few do’s and don’ts towards good mental health to help you keep on track.
Do – Exercise and Stay Healthy
Evidence shows that people who exercise regularly have better mental health and emotional wellbeing, and therefore lower rates of mental illness. Exercise is important for people with mental illness. It not only boosts mood, concentration and alertness, but improves our cardiovascular and overall physical health.
There is also good evidence that diet can affect mental health in good and bad ways. Consider seeing a nutritionist to help you with your diet in a way that suits you best.
Don’t – Go it Alone
If you are struggling talking to someone can help. For example, a problem shared is a problem halved. Almost half of Australians will experience a mental disorder at some time in their life. Depression, anxiety and substance abuse are the most common disorders.
There are lots of different ways to get help. Start by talking to your GP or someone close to you that you trust. In addition, there are good resources online that can help you find what you need.

Do – Develop Gratitude & Be Mindful
Being mindful of what you are grateful for can keep your mind on the good, and away from the bad. For instance, a gratitude journal is a good way of taking note of the things that keep you sane and happy.
Don’t – Think You Cant Help
They say the meaning of life is helping others. Although you may not always feel like you can help, when you have the energy, helping others can in turn help you feel better. Making a contribution to the community, however small, increases social wellbeing. Many people feel a sense of contribution through meaningful work. For example, volunteering, helping a neighbour or performing small acts of kindness. Take some time to do the things you really enjoy. Pleasant events can lead to positive emotions that in addition can cancel out negative feelings.

Do – Practice Self-Care
Find the self-care practices that keep you happy and healthy of body and mind. Some basics we need each day are daylight, fresh air and water, time spent with loved ones, time taking care of ourselves, healthy food and exercise. Incorporate a little bit of each in your day and you will have mastered self-care.
Above all don’t forget, if you enjoy massage, it is a great way to release tension from stress, boost your immune system, induce relaxation and improve sleep quality, produce ‘feel good’ hormones and improve your self esteem.
