Kinesiology means ‘the study of movement’. The term in Australia, is also used by complimentary health practitioners to describe a form of body therapy. A body therapy that uses muscle monitoring to look at ‘imbalances’ in the body with the aim to relieve these imbalances. So what is kinesiology and who can benefit from it?

What is kinesiology?

Developed from chiropractic applied kinesiology, it is also based on the ancient Chinese acupuncture theory of chi energy. Unlike applied kinesiology, where muscles are tested for strength, kinesiology uses muscle monitoring as a form of biofeedback from the subject. Practitioners use acupressure along the meridians to get biofeedback on negative energy stored in the body. [1]

What happens in a session?

In your first session, your practitioner will go through a detailed case history, including;

  • Previous health or illness
  • Emotional and psychological history
  • Traumas
  • Surgeries and genetic patterns
  • Work
  • Family and relationships
  • Financial pressures
  • Spiritual practices
  • Relaxation time
  • Exercise and nutritional goals

With this information the kinesiology practitioner will test your muscles with a series of simple tests to receive biofeedback, with the aim to find and correct imbalances.

How do kinesiologist treat imbalances?

There are various methods used by practitioners to help treat the patient and therefore rid them of negative energies.

Some of the techniques available include:

  • acupressure
  • lymphatic massage
  • hypertonic muscle release
  • attention to reflex, trigger and body points
  • energetic healing remedies such as crystals, sound, flower essences and homeopathy
  • aromatherapy
  • meditation
  • nutritional advice.

What conditions can kinesiology treat?

People who benefit from acupuncture or chiropractic treatments can also benefit from kinesiology.

It’s best used to treat conditions such as;

  • Stress and anxiety
  • Trauma
  • Nutritional imbalances
  • Muscle injury healing
  • Fears and phobias

Kinesiology is considered to be a pseudoscience and therefore cannot diagnose or treat disease or illness. There is little scientific evidence of the underlying philosophy and claims of benefit.[2]
